How the price of a gold piece is worked out

A gold bangle on a small jeweller's scale

The price of a gold piece is not a number someone picks. It is worked out from three things, and you can check each of them.

1. The weight

Every piece is weighed in grams. Two rings that look alike can differ by a gram or two, and that difference is in the price.

2. Today's rate for its karat

Gold is traded around the world every day, and its price moves. Each karat has its own rate per gram, because each holds a different share of pure gold. Our shop takes the day's rate and prices every piece from it, which is why the same piece can cost a little more or a little less from one day to the next.

3. The making charge

This is the work: designing, casting, setting and finishing the piece. A plain chain takes less work than a filigree necklace, so its making charge is lower. Pieces set with stones also carry the value of the stones.

Putting it together

Price = weight × today's rate for the karat + making charge (+ stones, if any)

For example, a 10 gram 21K bangle is priced at 10 grams times today's 21K rate per gram, plus its making charge.

Why it matters to you

When the parts are shown, you can compare two pieces fairly, see what you are paying for the gold and what for the work, and know what the gold in your piece is worth later. On every piece in our shop you will find its karat and weight, and the price is worked out from today's rate.

Every piece is priced from its weight and today’s gold rate.
